Fat Captive Animals (and I am Not Really Talking About a Zoo)!

May 20th, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a news story on TV about zoo animals.  The animals in a Chicago zoo were getting so fat that it was beginning to seriously affect their health.  Most of this is due to the fact that, in captivity, the animals never move.  They get very lethargic and sedentary.  As well, they are given many treats to keep them happy and satisfied.  These two behaviors are a deadly combination.  Read the article about it here. Cankles, and Bra Bulge, and Muffin Tops…Oh My!!

May 6th, 2008

…and saddlebags, and back fat, and teacher’s elbow (one I take personal offense to), and all those other awful things!

In case you are not sure what one of these terms means, let’s review.

1. Cankles:  I think Seinfeld coined this phrase.  Cankle is a term for fat ankles.  Specifically, when the ankle is so fat, that you cannot distinguish it from the calf; calf + ankle= cankle.  After the Seinfeld episode aired there seemed to be a rush of women wanting to find out how to get rid of their cankles. Hello!

April 24th, 2008

I know it has been a long time since I have made a post on this blog, but don’t worry I haven’t given up on it, I have just been really busy lately.  I have been distracted by all sorts of things, including; studying for an exam, family visiting, and an unexpected trip back home.

But I haven’t been distracted from my workouts. I started a new training program that I posted under the My Training Program link at the top.  Let me tell you, it’s a killer!  It’s the hardest program I have ever done… and I love it!!!  Check it out!

My Top 5 “Most Coveted” Celebrity Bodies

March 18th, 2008

As women, we get bombarded with pictures of skinny celebrities everyday. We hear the commentaries about how fashion magazines are creating unrealistic expectations for the way females should look.  In most cases, I agree. I meet young girls each day who want to be “skinny,” like Nicole Ritchie or Lindsay Lohan, and I will be the first one to say that this look is not something girls should aspire to.  Not only is it unhealthy, it’s ugly too.  Today however, I want to look at the opposite side of this issue, because there are also celebrities whose bodies I admire, and whom I think should be a motivation to us “average” women.  Here are the top 5 celebrity bodies that inspire me. Squats vs Machines: Most Women Don’t Know Squat!

March 14th, 2008

Let’s examine these two seemingly compatable exercises, the squat vs. the “leg machines.”  In my day to day fitness discussions with other women, I hear about the leg machines… a lot.  When I am in the gym and I look around at what other women are doing, they are on the leg machines… a lot.  But on the other hand, I only know one or two other women besides myself that squat.  If you are not sure what I mean by “leg machines,” I am talking about the leg press, leg extension, leg curl, abductor, and adductor machines, which many women usually do a circuit of when working their legs. Temptation is Everywhere

February 27th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but for me it seems like everytime I try to cut back on the junk food, there suddenly becomes an abundance of free food everywhere I look.  And not just any free food, really tasty free food. When you are following a healthy diet, temptation is everywhere, and the hardest part is finding the self-control to walk away. Attention Moms!

February 25th, 2008

Under the “Reviews” tab at the top of the page I have posted a review of an awesome new fitness product.  In November, I was fortunate to meet trainer and mom Holly Rigsby, who shared with me her revolutionary new fitness program for busy moms, Fit Yummy Mummy.  It is designed especially for moms who have NO free time on their hands.  You can do the workouts in less than 90 min per week.  Yes, I said week!  And, you can do them all in the comfort of your own home.

I thought I would share this product with you, because I myself have tried it, and it rocks.  And, you don’t HAVE to be a mom to use it.  It will work for any woman who is short on time.

As well, I have posted a video of Holly’s Holiday Bonus Workout under the “Videos,” tab.  Check it out, and enjoy!!

Where Are All the Fit Girls?

February 22nd, 2008

Tonight, while working out in my gym, I walked around to the different parts of the center and spent some time observing the women there.  I discovered some trends, that honestly did not surprise me in the least, but I felt I should share.  In my gym, as in most gyms, there are three main areas; the cardio room, the machine (nautilus type equipment) area, and the free weight section.  There were women in all three areas, but in drastically unbalanced proportions.  The most noticeable thing, the thing that didn’t surprise me, was that the women in each area were distinctly different.  Read the rest of this entry »

What’s in My Kitchen Right Now

February 18th, 2008

If you have ever watched that MTV show Cribs, where they tour celebrities homes, then you know one of the best parts is seeing what is in their fridge.  I decided to share with you some of the things that you would find in my kitchen right now if you looked.  I am hoping this will motivate some of you to really look in your own kitchens and see what’s there.  For me, if I have junk in the house, I will eat it.  So I don’t buy junk food.  We recently had some family stay with us that brought two children.  We had to take a special shopping trip, just to make our pantry seem more “normal” for the kids.

Figuring out what foods to have around your house is one of the hardest things to do, with companies selling “low fat, diet breakfast bars,” that are full of sugar and processed grains, and the belief that milk, sugar, flour, and bread are “must-haves” for each household.  I am by no means a nutritionist or dietician, but I eat pretty healthy.  So here’s a list of some of the foods I couldn’t live without.   Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Birthday to Me!

February 13th, 2008

veggie cake

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday dear me, Happy Birthday to me!

So, it’s my birthday, and I am trying to cut fat.  What to do, what to do?  I find myself in this predicament every year, probably because my birthday is in February and I always tend to pig-out over the holidays, then decide to fix my diet at this time of year.  Do I eat cake, or do I pass on it?  Read the rest of this entry »
