Goodbye “Fat Jeans,” Hello “Skinny Jeans!”
February 3rd, 2008 | by Lisa |
Let me clarify something that I mentioned in my first post. When I talk about “skinny jeans,” I mean my small, sexy jeans that I love, not the “quote, unquote” skinny jean style that has become popular in the last few years. You know the ones I am talking about, the one that make your butt the widest part of your body, whether it really is or not. The jeans that taper down to the ankle. Jeans that would evoke feelings of being stuck in a Pat Benatar video. And frankly, jeans that would probably NEVER fit my body, no matter how badly I wanted them to.
The first thing that I have had to learn in my fitness journey is that you can never expect your body to be something it isn’t. At my fittest, I was wearing a size 4, an all-time low for me. But my scale weight was 130 pounds. A far cry from the 110 pounds that the Body Mass Index test says my 5′2″ frame should be. For the first time I truly understood the phrase “muscle weighs more than fat” and I came to grips with the fact that my genetics had destined me to look more like a gymnast than a fashion model. And I am okay with that.
Regardless of our body type, we owe it to ourselves to be the best us we can be. In the past few years I realized that I could gain muscle very easily, yet I could also put on fat easily if I wasn’t careful. So, I had two options. I could look like a buff, compact gymnast; or a short, squatty, chubby girl. Hmm… easy choice, huh?
So, I started squatting, deadlifting, doing push-ups, pull-ups, and other exercises to build muscle. And I did, easily in fact. I saw the weight on the scale go up, and my pants size go down. I gained about ten pounds, but went from a size 8, to a size 4.
Even today, as I create this mission to get back into my skinny jeans, I weigh more than I did 3 years ago, but am a size smaller, and my body fat percentage is lower.
Squats, lunges, and deadlifts have made my legs stronger, firmer, leaner, and shapelier than ever, yet it has also made them bigger. As for those “skinny jeans,” forget them. They would never, ever fit my body. Plus, I personally don’t think they are the least bit flattering, on any body. Except maybe the fashion models, that have absolutely no muscle tone at all. And who wants to look like that? Or I should say, if you do, and you are reading this, you are probably in the wrong place.
So, let’s all agree, we are going to kick our own butts, work as hard as we can, get into our own “skinny jeans,” and throw away our “fat jeans” forever! Let’s all be the best, strongest, most muscular, and sexiest we can be! Whether that makes us look like a gymnast or a fashion model.
Happy training,
Lisa
